Michael is a high school senior who wants to join the Army when he graduates.  He is worried that something could happen that would put him behind bars.  He feels that it doesn’t really matter what he does, but that he will be found guilty of being black.

They say I have my fathers’ eyes

But when they put my father away

they said he had the eyes of a devil.

They say I have my fathers nose

But when they put my father away

they said he could smell trouble a mile away.

They say I have my fathers’ hands

But when they put my father away

they said it was for battery.

They say I have my fathers smile

But when they put my father away

they said he could grin in your face while he cut you in the back.

They say I have my fathers’ ways

But when they put my father away

they said he was always getting into trouble.

They say I’m just like my father.

Just like my father?
